Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to develop gender education program focusing on enhancing sexual violence prevention for preliminary officers of South Korea.

Methods: This methodological study was performed through 1) educational need assessment through related literature review and focus group interview among 6 senior cadets of a military academy in August of 2018, and 2) program development through validation of 10 experts in March of 2019. The data were analyzed with thematic analysis and content validity index.

Results: In the focus group interview 11 sub-themes and 4 themes were extracted and the 4 themes were: ¡®Public sex education with realistic effects¡¯, ¡®Gender knowledge based on gender understanding¡¯, ¡®Understanding of case handling for the eradication of sexual violence cases¡¯, and ¡®Understanding and respect between genders beyond conflict¡¯. The developed sex education program for preliminary officers were composed of 6 themes (Gender respect, sexual harassment prevention, sexual violence prevention, prostitution prevention, bystander intervention, and action for problem solving) with 11 sessions using lectures, discussions, watching video clips, and role plays.

Conclusion: The program was developed based on educational needs of cadets as future officers of the military. Therefore, it can be used as a cadet's sexuality education program applicable in reality and would have practical effects in the future.
